Feedback for Red and the Wolf Project
Citymoves Dance Agency , 13th - 17th of July, Aberdeen
"First of all, thanks for a great week for Rowan, it was something she really enjoyed throughout and was great to see how much of the movement material she had taken onboard! From my point of view as an audience member/someone who has seen the piece progress:Red and The Wolf immerses the audience in a shadowy and mysterious world, where there are glimpses of the familiar and moments of confusion as we encounter the unknown. The young workshop participants - guided by 3 professional dance artists - in turn guide us through the pathways of the forest, inviting us to follow and gently asking us to join them. As a result we see the dance sequences and motifs clearly emerge from all around us; sometimes jagged, wolf-like patterns, sometimes soft and rolling feminine movement; up close beside us on the floor. The patterns and structures are clearly organised, enabling audience members to take part, with further guidance from personal headsets giving instructions. A moody, driving soundtrack supports this restless and attentive piece."
Ruth Kent, Parent of Rowan, Development Officer ( Outreach and Equalities), Citymoves dance Agency, Aberdeen.
"I work with Freya and I arranged for her to attend the workshop as she thrives on performing and I feel that the week was immensely beneficial for her. As she was only 7, I wasn’t sure that she would be able to attend but you were very flexible and welcoming and I feel that the influence of a slightly older peer group have improved her confidence and discipline level as she can often struggle to concentrate in an academic setting. I found that involving the audience was unusual but supported the children in a much more engaging way without the intimidation of standing on stage in front of a huge crowd and Freya has expressed her wishes to continue performing at a weekly group which I am currently trying to arrange for her. I would definitely recommend the experience for other children and young people in the future and am very impressed with the work that you all do. Well done. Please let me know if you will be arranging any other performances in the near future."
Laura Bailey, Family Resource Worker for Freya aged 7, Citymoves Dance Agency, Aberdeen.
"My child is Hagar Libman enjoyed the week of the project very much and I thought the final performance was very original and impressive. The use of different media (headphones, music) was very good and the children danced well."
Bracha Libman, parent of Hagar aged 13, Citymoves Dance Agency
"Sophie absolutely loved the dance workshop week. It introduced her to a different style of dancing than what she is used to, and one which suited her well I think. She was at the City Moves Sessions. The performance was absolutely fantastic and I think the children really enjoyed the parental involvement. She would love to be involved again next year. Many thanks."

Woodend Barn, Banchory, 20th - 24th of July
]“Woodend Barn hosted Liminal Dance Company for a week in July. We had around 20 children from the community get involved with the project, and all had an extremely positive experience. The performance at the end of the week was a particular highlight for the participants. Gemma and her team were extremely friendly and professional. We'd recommend booking this project as a great way for kids to learn to work together in a creative environment, and ignite their imaginations!”
Ashley Lawrie, Programming & Marketing Manager, Woodend Barn, Banchory
"Big thanks to Gemma and all the Liminal Dance Gang. We took a bit of a gamble enrolling our daughter, Maia, in the Red and the Wolf workshop at the Woodend Barn. Maia is almost 9 and has Aspergers Syndrome. She is sparkly, kind, smart and a joyful little toot, but can struggle a little emotionally and socially. Gemma and all at the Workshop were brilliant with her, ensuring that she was comfortable and felt supported and secure as she learned new moves and techniques. We really did not think that she would cope with the performance, but boy, were we wrong.....she was outstanding! She moved so confidently and beautifully and was so engaged in the performance....it was simply magnificent....better than I could have possibly imagined. The performance overall was superb.....really unique and beautiful. I cannot speak highly enough of Gemma and Liminal Dance and look forward to future workshops. I am now looking for dance classes for Maia.....she has found her talent!!!! Thank you."
Hayley Jaffrey, Parent of Maia almost 9, Woodend Barn, Banchory
"I would like to thank Liminal Dance very much for giving my daughter, Emily, the opportunity to take part in this workshop. She loved every minute of this and I think the experience has given her more confidence, self esteem and enjoyment in her dance. It was a great week for her and the show at the end of the week was amazing. To get so many children/teenagers with a wide age range to perform with such confidence and cohesion was really something and I loved the way the 3 teachers were so involved as well. Emily would love to take part in something similar in the future if she was ever given such an opportunity again. Many thanks for all your hard work and commitment to this project, it is fantastic."
Kairen Griffiths, parent of Emily, Woodend Barn, Banchory
"I had a great time taking part in Red and the Wolf and all the teachers were really nice. Everything we did was really fun and I didn't want the week to end.I really enjoyed the show and I would love to do it again."
Emily aged 13, Woodend Barn, Banchory
"Emily had the most wonderful experience with you all during the week she spent with you at Woodend Barn this July.Emily enjoyed learning new dance routines and movements. She spoke about listening to the music and letting her body begin to follow which is a very mature thing for a 10 year old to absorb and apply. The performance was mesmerising, we had never experienced an interactive performance like this before. The children were so endearing and you were absorbed in with their enthusiasm to the performance itself. A most enjoyable experience for us all. Many thanks for all your hard work during the week and the performance at the end.Looking forward to the next exciting event next year."
Kate Mauchline, parent of Emily aged 10, Woodend Barn, Banchory
"Firstly I'd like to thank you for sharing your skill, time & patience with all the children at woodend barn. My daughter Jo-Ann looks up to you, desperate to be a dancer herself when she's older. This is her 2nd show with yourself and the first show Four Seasons was such a great success, she was delighted to see you again for the red and the wolf. The whole week was excellent from start to finish, us as parents were desperate to see the performance, having had heard so much about it. It's obviously funded which is great - a fantastic experience for all youngsters to get together over the holidays, in a positive environment with great inspirational people like yourself.Thank you once again."
Louise Greig, Parent of Jo-ann, Woodend Barn Banchory.
"With regard to the actual performance as a family we enjoyed the experience as it was unique and interactive. The children obviously enjoyed the experience as this shone through on the performance. My daughter Tegan Knight who came to Woodend Barn in Banchory, thrived on the dance routine and coaching received from yourself and fellow dance teachers. It was a wonderful opportunity for Tegan to be able to learn some new techniques and to be part of a performance. I'm sure if there are future events that Tegan would love to attend again. Many thanks."
Melanie Knight, Mother of Tegan Knight, Woodend Barn Banchory
"Eilidh thoroughly enjoyed her experience at the Red & The Wolf workshop. Each morning she couldn't wait to get there, to learn new moves and to practice what she had learnt the day before. It was great to see her so fired up!After a weeks worth of work the children did an amazing performance. I felt awkward at first, outside my comfort zone. However needing to show my younger daughter that it was fun to join in, I let my guard down and appreciated the performance so much more by participating. It really was a great experience and all involved did a fantastic job. I really feel Eilidh has been so lucky to have had this experience, thank you Liminal Dance."

"NEA has discovered a growing desire for dance, evidenced during our summer
term, and summer programme of drop-in workshops for children aged 5 to 12.
Working with a professional company, Liminal, at the end of the summer on
the Red and the Wolf project gave many of those young people the ideal
opportunity to expand upon the taster work they had undertaken.
They were able to work with the company and the dancers for a full week, and
take part in the final performance. The aspirations and production values on
this project were incredibly high and it I know the participants from NEA,
aged 8 to 16, gained a huge amount from the process, demonstrated by their
commitment to the development/rehearsal week and the focus they showed
during a challenging performance.
Liminal were a joy to work with, using the resources available at NEA to
their best effect and taking a holistic view of working with the children,
to bring the very best out in them. NEA is not often able to offer this
immersive type of experience so to work with a company who can offer a high
quality programme is of huge benefit to us, and of course to the young
people involved, It was an absolute pleasure hosting Liminal with Red
and the Wolf, and it was obvious that the participants had a phenomenal week
with the company.
I thought the piece was really ambitious, looked gorgeous, and loved the
audio feed into the headphones and the choice of being either the wolf or
the girl (and it was fun to see what other people had selected!). The
commitment and focus of the performers and the young people was really
clear, and I thought some of the 'group' moves were astounding.
I'm not a natural joiner in'er so I preferred to stand back and watch the action
unfold rather than be part of it, but I heard from other audience members
that the joining in aspect was amazing and that they loved the totally immersive
nature of it.
Thanks so much for choosing to work with us, the week really added to our
programme, and do keep in touch with future ideas."
Kate Wimpress, Director, North Edinburgh Arts, Edinburgh
"Choreographer Gemma Williams and professional dancers worked with a locally-based community cast of young people aged 8-16 in a series of workshops which culminated in a live performance of the work on Wednesday evening.
Inspired by the Little Red Riding Hood fairtytale, Red and the Wolf tells the much-loved story through music, movement and dance and took the audience who were not merely passive observers, but became part of the performance – on an ever-changing, fantastic journey.
It was a fascinating experience, a real adventure, and all credit to the young participants Gemma Williams, Justine Lim, Christina Duncan, Abigail Courtney, Katherine Rennie, Jiaya Aui, Gabrielle Glean, Staney Mckay, Ferdie Mckay, Sorcha Minto, Julie Dorozynska, Freya McNicoll, Inez MacIntosh and Rhona Payne who really put their hearts and souls into the performance. Bravo!"
Dave Pickering, Reporter and Photographer, North Edinburgh News
"Red and the Wolf was a superb piece of community dance work. My eight year old daughter Freyja loved every minute of the experience! The tutors showed great skill when working with a wide range of children and young people. My daughter constantly talked about her daily experiences and spent evenings showing us what she had learned! The skill and confidence that Freyja developed through participating in 'Red and the Wolf' was clear to see. The final performance was of the highest quality... I loved how the group made the line between performers and audience disappear so that the children were leading their families as part of the event with everyone participating (Freyja's grandmother took part in her wheelchair.) This was without doubt the best community arts work I have experienced and could not recommend Liminal Dance highly enough. A huge thanks to Gemma and the team and we hope Freyja will have the opportunity to take part in future Liminal projects."
Fergus McNicol, parent of Freyja, North Edinburgh Arts Centre
"I wasn't sure at first but the teachers were very kind and nice... the dancing was tricky at first but the teachers and others all helped make it fun and you got to choose what you did and I really liked that! Overall 'Red and the Wolf' was FANTASTIC!!!"
Freyja McNicol, 8, participant, North Edinburgh Arts Centre
"Abigail felt confident and safe with your group. She was anxious the first day but came out very vocal telling me all about the story and what she had done. She has always been interested in contemporary and this project has really inspired her. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance and thought it was very clever using head phones for different aspects of the story to allow audience participation. I knew , as Abigail mentioned being involved with the performance but did not expect it to be how it was. I thought it was great and a great experience for Abigail. Thanks again."
Kerry Courtney, Parent of Abigail, North Edinburgh Arts, Edinburgh
"I enjoyed everything !! The dance teachers were fun and made learning moves easy. The other children in the dance group made me feel welcome as I had missed the first 2 rehearsals. I loved the performance as it was very different to other performances I have done & I enjoyed the audience participation . I would really like to do more dancing with Liminal dance in the future and would recommend it to my friends. Thank you Gemma, Justine & Christina !! :-)"

Lesley Steedman, parent of Carrie, The Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh.
"My daughter very much enjoyed her experience with Liminal dance. She was very enthusiastic to go to the practices each day and came home with lots of news about what they had been doing. Many thanks to all involved."
